By configuring the log reader, you may be able to reduce its effect on the publisher s transaction log. There are several ways to make the log reader process more efficient. One way is to use a caching controller for the log drive volume. Since log reader Agent reads from the log drive, a cache on a controller allows the read to take place from the cache, rather than causing a random I/O to occur. Another way to tune the log reader is by modifying the frequency that it runs. The log reader can run on a continuous basis, or it can be configured to run periodically. On a system that is not experiencing a large amount of update activity, it may be acceptable for the log reader to run continuously, but on systems where the transaction log is busy, configuring the log reader to run less frequently can improve performance of the publisher. You are not reading from the transaction log as often, thus allowing the transaction log I/Os to remain sequential. Reads from the transaction log tends to randomize the otherwise sequential I/Os. Tuning the log reader to run periodically is done through the scheduling of the agent. If the log reader is scheduled to run continuously, you can set the polling interval, which sets how often the Log Reader Agent checks the transaction log. The default value of five seconds is usually sufficient; however, if you cannot accept a five-second delay, this number can be tuned down to a lower value. The polling interval on Log Reader Agent and on the Distribution Agent determines the time that a change could take to propagate through the system. Another way to make the Log Reader Agent more efficient in heavily used systems is to increase the read batch size. This specifies how many transactions are read from the transaction log and copied to the distributor at a time. In heavily used systems, increasing this parameter can improve performance. In addition, when increasing the polling interval, it may be useful to increase the batch size. If you increase the read batch size on Log Reader Agent, it is advisable to increase the commit batch size on the distributor to correspond to the new read batch size. The Log Reader Agent can also be configured through SQL Server Management Studio (or the Replication Monitor) by selecting the properties on Log Reader Agent. In SQL Server Management Studio, this is found through the Distributor Properties tool under Agent Profiles and the Profile Defaults button. In the Replication Monitor, this is found under Agent Profiles. Here you can choose a different agent profile or select to modify the currently selected profile, which in this case is the Default Profile (if you haven t changed it), as shown in Figure 20-47.

Monitoring the Transactional Replication System
As with the other replication types, monitoring transactional replication is done via the Windows performance monitor (perfmon). Within perfmon there are a number of objects that are added when SQL Server replication is present. These objects include the following:
SQLServer:Replication Agents Gives counts of each type of agent that is running. SQLServer:Replication Dist Provides information on distribution latency. Long latencies can be a sign that the distributor is overloaded. SQLServer:Replication Logreader Provides data on Logreader activity and latency. Look for long latencies, which can be an indication that there is a problem reading the transaction log on the publisher. Also watch the number of Delivered Transactions per second. If this is high, you may need to add more I/O capacity to the transaction log disk volumes.
By using the Windows performance monitor and monitoring these values, you can sometimes determine if there is a performance problem in the Log Reader Agent or in the distributor. This perfmon data provides a lot of valuable information but may not always identify problems.
