6. Close both browser windows. In Object Explorer, right-click the Working with Storage database, and then click Process. The default processing option for the database is Process Full. Performing a full process of the database rebuilds all objects, even though the Process Affected Objects value is currently Do Not Process. That setting doesn t apply to this situation. 7. Now take a look at what happens when you have new dimension and fact table records, but only perform an incremental update of the dimension. 9. Click the Open File button on the toolbar, navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings \<username>\My Documents\Microsoft Press\as2005sbs\chap12 folder, double-click the Incremental Update Warehouse.sql file, and then click Connect. This SQL script adds one new record to the Sales Territory dimension table for Japan and another query adds another record to the FactResellerSales table to record a sale in Japan. 10. Click the Execute button on the toolbar. Now you re ready to see what happens when you incrementally update the Sales Territory dimension. 11. In Object Explorer, right-click Sales Territory, click Process, click OK, and then click Close when processing is complete. The Process Update option is an incremental update. Analysis Services reads the dimension table and adds new members that it finds to the dimension map, deletes members that are no longer found in the table, and applies any other changes that it detects. 12. Switch to the MOLAP cube browser, and then click the Reconnect button. The MOLAP cube does not recognize the new fact table record. You don t see Japan listed on rows because the browser, by default, excludes members for which there is no related fact table data. 13. Right-click anywhere in the Sales Territory Country column in the grid, and then click Show Empty Cells.

When you click the Process command for a cube that has already been processed, the default processing option is always Process Full. When you fully process a cube, the Analysis server checks to see whether any changes have been made to any of the dimension schemas used by the cube. If changes have been made, the server processes the dimension before processing the cube. The server then generates a set of temporary files containing replacement data for the cube. Once processing has completed successfully, the server deletes the current files for the cube and renames the temporary files to the permanent names. The Process Data option for a cube is virtually identical to the Full Process option. In both cases, the server generates all the files for a new cube, swapping the files into place when the processing is complete. The only real difference is that the Process Data option doesn t check to see whether you have made any changes to the dimension schema. It processes the cube using the existing dimension files, period. One option, Process Incremental, is both powerful and dangerous. It creates new cube files, precisely as if you were using the Process Full option. When the processing is complete, however, the server doesn t replace the old files with the new ones. Rather, it merges the two sets of files, creating a third set of cube files. Finally, it deletes all but the third set of files and renames those files to become the final cube files. One implication of this operation is that for a single cube, the Process Incremental option might actually require more disk space than the Process Full option, since it creates three sets of files, rather than just two. A more important implication is that if you use the Process Incremental option using a fact table that includes values already stored in the cube, those values will be double-counted after you process the cube. An alternate option, Process Data, simply clears out the data in the cube structure, and reloads data from the fact table as defined for each partition. In this procedure, you ll use the Process Incremental processing option to update the MOLAP cube, and then you ll fix the resulting errors by using the Process Data processing option. Update data in a cube incrementally 1. In the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio, expand the following items in the tree Working with Storage, MOLAP, Measure Groups, Reseller Sales, and Partitions, right-click the Reseller Sales partition, and then click Process. 2. Select Process Incremental in the Processing Options drop-down list, and then click the Configure link. 3. In the Data Source Or View drop-down list, select SSAS Step by Step DW in the Data Source folder, and then click OK.
