Select any instance of the field you want to format, and then choose Conditional
Formatting from the Data menu. Note
Don t try any of these procedures with a column heading; they won t work.
2 When the Conditional Formatting task pane appears, click the Create button, and
choose one of these commands from the shortcut menu: Show Content Hide Content
Choose this command to specify conditions under which column values will be visible. Choose this command to specify conditions under which columns values will appear empty. Apply Formatting
Choose this command to specify when values should have an alternative appearance.
3 When the Condition Criteria dialog box shown in Figure 38-31 appears, configure the
condition or conditions you want to detect. For details, refer to the procedure for configuring the Filter Criteria dialog box, shown previously in Figure 38-27. Figure 38-31. Setting criteria for conditional formatting involves the same process as setting filtering criteria. You can base conditional formatting of one field on the value of the same field, a different field, or several fields. 1008 Part 10: Collaborating with Teams and Workgroups
Leveraging Windows SharePoint Services
4 Click OK. If you chose the Apply Formatting command in step 2, FrontPage will
display the Modify Style dialog box, shown in Figure 38-32. To apply styles, click the Format button, and then choose Font, Paragraph, Border, Numbering, or Position. Figure 38-32. Conditional formatting can apply any CSS style attribute to the data on display.
This dialog box works exactly like the Modify Style dialog box that configures CSS styles for a normal HTML element, except that you can t apply named styles such a style selectors, class selectors, and ID selectors. You can only configure inline styles. For more information about configuring CSS style properties, refer to Assigning Style Sheet Properties, on page 602. 5 When you ve finished applying styles, click OK.
The Conditional Formatting task pane will display each conditional formatting rule you define. Figure 38-33, for example, shows the display for two rules: one that applies format ting and one that hides content. Any data that Design view displays will reflect the rules in effect, as will the entire Web page if you view it in your browser. A single Data View Web Part can contain as many conditional formatting rules as you want. To create more, just repeat the preceding procedure. However, if you create multiple rules for the same field, try to avoid overlaps. It s fine, for example, to create two rules on the same field, one for values of 0 to 10 and another for values of 11 to 50. But if you create one rule for 0 to 10 and another for 0 to 50, the Web Part might not apply them in the order you expect. Clicking any rule displays a drop-down menu with these choices: Edit Condition Modify Style Delete
Redisplays the Condition Criteria dialog box so that you can modify the criteria for the rule.
Redisplays the Modify Style dialog box so that you can modify the styles that an Apply Formatting rule assigns. Eliminates the rule. 1009 Par t 10: Collaborating with Teams and Workgroups

Figure 38-33. The Conditional Formatting task pane displays each conditional formatting rule in effect for a page. The next three commands on the drop-down menu override or restore the rule s condition or effect. This can be helpful for seeing the effect of a rule even if no matches occur in the current data and for checking the values of a field that a rule hides. The exact commands vary according to the type of rule. For Show Content rules, the three commands are: Show: Default
The rule will display data in accordance with the condition you
specified.
Show: All
The rule will ignore the condition you specified and display data The rule will ignore the condition you specified and hide data in in all cases.
Show: None
all cases.
For Hide Content rules, the following commands will appear: Hide: Default
The rule will hide data in accordance with the condition you
specified.
Hide: All
The rule will ignore the condition you specified and hide data The rule will ignore the condition you specified and show data in all cases.
Hide: None
in all cases.
Leveraging Windows SharePoint Services
For Apply Formatting rules, the following commands will appear: Apply: Default
The rule will format the data in accordance with the condition
you specified.
Apply: All
The rule will ignore the condition you specified and apply the formatting you specified in all cases. The rule will ignore the condition you specified and never apply the formatting you specified. 38
Apply: None
The Set Visibility button at the top of the Conditional Formatting task pane provides more global control over the effect of rules. To use this facility, click the button, and then choose one of these commands from the resulting drop-down menu:
