Send connectors are not explicitly created when the Hub or Edge Transport role is installed on a computer, though invisible Send connectors are created on the basis of the Active Directory site topology so that mail can flow within the Exchange organization. As mentioned earlier, message flow to and from hosts on the Internet requires that an Edge Transport server be subscribed to Hub Transport servers by the Edge subscription process or that special manual configuration be performed. If you want to configure a Hub Transport server to receive and transmit messages to the Internet (for example, when an organization does not use an Edge Transport server), connectors must be manually configured to allow message transmission. When you create a Send connector for a Hub Transport server, the connector can be used by any Hub Transport server within your organization. This is because the connector configuration data is stored within Active Directory. For example, if you configure a Send connector to forward messages to an external domain, any Hub Transport server in your organization will use the information within that connector to route messages destined for that domain. During the connector creation process, covered later in this lesson, you can select which Hub Transport servers you wish to associate the connector with. It is possible to associate any number of Hub Transport servers in your organization with a connector as long as you do not also associate an Edge Transport server with the connector. It is not possible to associate the same Send connector with both Edge and Hub Transport servers; one or the other type of transport server must be chosen. Partner
This type of connector is used to forward messages to partner domains. Partner connectors allow connections only to SMTP servers that authenticate using TLS certificates. This type allows an administrator to configure a mix of settings. Custom
When configuring a custom Send connector, you specify the address space that the Send connector applies to, the smart host (if any) that messages addressed to or are forwarded to, how DNS resolution occurs, and which transport servers within the organization the Send connector will be applied to. A smart host is a special host that forwards mail to a specific destination. They are most often used when you want to route mail using a more direct route than passing it across the Internet. You will configure a Send connector during the practice exercises at the end of this lesson. MORE INFO
More on Send connectors
For more information on Send connectors, consult the following TechNet article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998662.aspx. Foreign Connectors
Foreign connectors are a special type of connector that can be installed only on a Hub Transport server. Foreign connectors use drop directories to transmit messages to a local messaging server that uses a transport mechanism other than SMTP. The foreign gateway server is configured to obtain messages from the drop directory and forward them from there. An example of this type of server is a third-party fax server where Exchange deposits messages that are to be forwarded via fax into a special drop directory and the third-party fax software takes over from there. You can find out more about foreign connectors by navigating to the following link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996779.aspx.
