Abstract goal You want to compare different values against each other . Concrete goal You want to show the differences in total revenues, comprising different revenue elements (REV-01 to REV-06) recorded within a fiscal year .

Below are some ways you can define and understand relationships and references between data table and chart:

Check whether the sheet is protected and unprotect it, if necessary . Left-click an empty space in the chart . The data table displays color markings that are used to visually identify the table ranges to be used in the chart . Right-click an empty space in the chart and choose the Select Data command from the context menu . In the Select Data Source dialog box displayed, enter and select the reference to the entire chart data range . At the same time, the table range in question receives a marquee . Left-click one of the data series (a column, a segment in a stacked column, a line, an area, a slice of pie, and so on) . The data table displays color markings that visually identify the table ranges that belong to the data series currently selected .

The chart data range is the range of cells D4:E10 . The revenue elements (REV-01 to REV-06) form the categories in the primary horizontal axis (other frequently used, although not always valid, terms are category axis or X axis) and their labels . The numeric values determine the height of the columns and the scale used to subdivide the primary vertical axis (also referred, sometimes inaccurately, as value axis or Y axis) . The major gridlines of the primary vertical axis are horizontal lines drawn on the plot area to make it easier to determine the height of a column . Stacked Columns This example is provided in the Columns 2 worksheet and in Figure 3-14:

Abstract goal You want to compare absolute values against each other and, at the same time, show the absolute proportion occupied by each category element in relation to the category as a whole . Concrete goal You want to visualize the overall significance of four revenue elements (EA-01 to EA-04) in three fiscal years as well as the absolute proportion that pertains to each fiscal year .

The ideal solution for this task is to display specific subvalues by placing them on top of each other to represent one overall value . In the sample chart that follows, the data series are formed from the columns in the data table . Important You can easily change the data series orientation from columns to rows or vice

versa . Naturally, this does not require you to change the table structure of the source data . Rightclick an empty space in the chart and choose the Select Data command from the context menu . In the Select Data Source dialog box displayed, click the Switch Row/Column button .
